NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATIONS FOR CHILDCARE
With this article, Mac Ilusión wants to highlight and support the work carried out by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) specialized in helping and improving the lives of children. Mac Ilusión has been collaborating for years with local and international initiatives and organisations such as the Casa de la Caridad in Valencia, the Día del Niño y de la Niña through the Spanish Association of Products for Children and UNICEF.
There are many NGOs addressing a wide range of issues, from education to health and nutrition. Each organisation has its own mission and focus, but they all work to improve the lives of children and ensure they have a brighter future. We are going to find out a bit of the history and the broad work carried out by four of the most powerful organisations in the world.
UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) works around the world to improve the living conditions of children, with a focus on health care, nutrition and education. Its specific areas of attention are child protection and inclusion, child survival, education, social policy, emergency situations, gender equality and innovation, supply and logistics, research, evidence and analysis.
The statistics around the problem are devastating. According to its 2021 report, more than 5 million children under 5 years of age, including 2.4 million newborns, died in 2020.
Plan International works in more than 75 countries to improve the lives of boys and girls, with a focus on gender equality and the elimination of poverty. Plan International was born in Spain in 1937 promoted by the British journalist John Langdon-Davies and by the English volunteer Eric Muggeridge. In its early days, its objective was to help the boys and girls who were orphaned during the Spanish Civil War. Plan International’s work focuses on five main areas: Education, Child Protection, Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, and Participation and Leadership.
Children’s Villages was founded in Austria in 1949 with the aim of providing a safe and happy home for children who had lost their parents or been abandoned. The organisation now has a presence in more than 130 countries and has helped millions of children over the years. The Children’s Villages model is based on the belief that every child has the right to a safe and stable family and home. The organisation works to create a caring and supportive environment in which children can grow and develop in a healthy way.
Each children’s village is like a small community, made up of different homes, where children are cared for in a family environment that provides them with love, attention and emotional support.
Children’s rights are everyone’s problem and among all of us, we have to ensure that year after year, there are fewer boys and girls in the world in need of getting their basic needs and rights met. We encourage those of you who already collaborate with these NGOs to continue doing so and those who have not yet made the decision to start doing so.
